About

Who's behind South Leeds Community Radio?

South Leeds Community Radio is an independent charity supported by social enterprise Tiger11 as a wholly owned subsidiary. It was set up in 2006 by Catherine Mitchell and Al Garthwaite of Vera Media to give local people a voice and encourage people to get together and show the world how much talent and activity there is in the area. We were based in Vera Media’s room at the Hamara Centre before moving to smart new premises in Hillside in April 2009.

The radio station aims to produce quality programmes, made by and for the people of South Leeds. Working with Vera Media, we train people of all ages and backgrounds in multimedia, communication, ESOL, arts and basic skills, from beginners to advanced skills. We take on projects like Turn It Up and work closely with organisations and groups in the area, and with Leeds City Council.

South Leeds Community Radio involves local people in media, making their own programmes about issues that concern and ideas that inspire, and playing music for everyone in the community.

Who makes the programmes for South Leeds Community Radio?

We invite local people, community and voluntary groups and those who work in the area to come forward with ideas for programmes, news, views, issues, events, music, poetry, photographs for the website....

You don't have to make a programme yourself. An idea is enough. But our staff will support anyone who wants to learn to present, interview, edit, record, produce, DJ, give technical back-up, at whatever level you are at, from absolute beginners onwards.

Whether you have half-an-hour or several days a week to spare, contact us.

What will I hear?

A mixture of music, drama, documentary, talk, interviews, discussion, argument, faith, news, events, quizzes, opinion, solutions, cookery, gardening, stories, sport, poetry, chat about the issues that concern and the ideas that inspire people of all ages and backgrounds in our neighbourhoods.

Some programmes will be more interesting to one group of people than others. Not everyone likes Hip-Hop, wants to grow flowers, or enjoys football. But there'll be no porn, no swearing, no sexism or racism or anything that discriminates against a group of people due to their age, sex, background, disability, size or religion.

Some programmes will be in community languages (Bengali, Chinese, Polish, Punjabi, Urdu......).

Who pays the bills?

South Leeds Community Radio is very grateful to our current funders:

The Keepmoat Foundation, for funding two brilliant radio production courses for pupils at New Bewerley Community Primary School, and Cross Flatts Park Primary School, both in Leeds 11. Listen out for the programmes they made, broadcasting over this site soon.

Leeds City Council Area Management Committee for commissioning us to run TURN IT UP (hyperlink?) , a programme of music sessions for young people aged 11-19 taking place across inner-South Leeds this August, as part of the I Love South Leeds Festival

The Scott Trust, run by The Guardian newspaper, for contributing to our training programmes for volunteers

The Development Trusts Association, for paying the fees of a fundraiser for the station

The Neighbourhood Learning Fund, run by Adult Learning, Jobs and Skills, Leeds City Council, for paying for our new studios at Hillside

Evershed’s, “an international law firm for the 21st century”, based in Bridgewater Place, Leeds, who’ve given us lots of office furniture and donated new computers for our production and post-production suites

arts@leeds, Arts and Regeneration, Leeds City Council, for enabling us to keep going

Tiger11, for creating our wonderful new premises, seeing us through the move and covering our costs until we’re fully self-supporting.

What about the website?

We want the website to add to your enjoyment of
South Leeds Community Radio. There'll be pictures of everyone at work on South Leeds Community Radio, of the area, of the local panto or festival... There'll be recipes from the cooking programme, pictures of flowers to tie in with the gardening. As time goes by we shall include some video. South Leeds Community Radio is a multimedia experience!

We aim to give everyone a chance to join in.

Tell us what you want to hear

You don't have to get involved. Just let us know what would be interesting, entertaining or useful to you.

If you're a youth or community group, a college or school, a workplace or day centre, we'd like to work with you. What can we provide that's useful to you? How would you like to use the service? What content would be helpful to your user groups or students? How would they like to interact with South Leeds Community Radio on the internet - or when it's on the radio? Do you need own-language material? Can South Leeds Community Radio help you with ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) or other classes? Would your youth project like to produce, record or DJ a music programme?
We want to respond to everyone in the area, so just get in touch.
