Moorend Voice win major award
Moorend Voice

This is Moorend Voice, a group of adults with learning disabilities who completed a 12 week course in radio skills with Vera Media. They worked together to produce their own radio programme gaining confidence and communication skills along the way. They learned how to use the radio studio mixing desk to play music and also digital recorders which they used to record sounds and conduct interviews with each other and with various members of staff at the Moorend Centre.

In addition to learning how to use media equipment to make their own radio show, five members of the group gained a National OCN qualification in Teamwork and Communication Skills, while another member of the group completed a unit in Basic Audio Recording.

This is what they had to say about it:

'It was a fantastic course, I liked everything’. Ian Buttery
‘I liked playing music and recording on the microphones’. Sheida Fazal
‘I played music at the right speed and I liked putting the headphones on’. Stephen Taylor
‘I did the DJ mixer desk but I didn’t like putting the headphones on’. Linda Robins
‘I liked putting the headphones on and playing slow music’.Matthew Brown
‘I loved the course, the best thing was the interviews, I asked everyone here questions’. Tony White

All of the group really enjoyed the course and hope to be able to further their learning in radio skills and media in the future.

Workshops

South Leeds Community Radio runs workshops, usually for young people, at our premises or in youth centres, schools or colleges. The groups learn basic techniques and if time allows make a short programme. Sometimes these workshops are spread over several weeks, sometimes they last a week, and sometimes half a day. Let us know if you're interested.
